WORK
Landscape and habitat management await you at this camp in northern Germany. You will be working in the Nordr Heide nature reserve in south-west Schleswig-Holstein. Much of the area consists of inland dunes, heathland and dry grasslands surrounded by woodland and green spaces. These are grazed by Galloway cattle, Highland cattle, Exmoor ponies and goats to prevent scrub encroachment and keep existing woody vegetation in check. The same purpose is served by the weeding work your group will carry out. This involves removing non-native plants to preserve the unique flora and fauna of the inland dunes and heathland. In various areas, for example, you will make ponds more attractive to amphibians again by cutting back the shrub growth along the waters edge, or improve or restore the habitat of rare plants and animals in the area. You will also learn a great deal about the conservation of rare habitats, such as inland dunes and heathland, in both theory and practice. Take the opportunity to play an active role in one of Schleswig-Holsteins most valuable nature conservation areas and make a direct contribution to the preservation of unique species and habitats.
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Your accommodation is the Itzeh Waldorf School. It is closed during the summer holidays, so you can use two classrooms as dormitories. You will sleep on camp beds or air mattresses there, and shared showers and toilets are available in the same building. The kitchen is located in the annexe, where you can not only cook but also eat together if you wish. In addition, the bistro in another building is available for you to eat and relax. There is also plenty of space and various seating areas in the outdoor grounds. You cater for yourselves and cook together. Money for shopping will be provided. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any intolerances when registering.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
The Itzeh Waldorf School is idyllically situated on the outskirts of the small town of Itzeh. It takes just 15 minutes by bus to reach Itzeh town centre with its charming little pedestrianised area. At the weekend, its well worth taking a trip to the North Sea coast or to Hamburg

Host organization
IJGD
Ijgd is an independent non-profit organisation active in the field of international youth work. It is one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany.
After Worldwar II pupils from Hanover organised the first workcamps aiming to promote reconstruction, to reduce negative stereotypes through international encounters and to envisage new democratic forms of living together. In addition to workcamps, other activities have become part of the work over time. These are organised by six offices of ijgd and additional project offices. Young people can take part in mid-term and long-term voluntary services in Germany and abroad. The fields of activity include social and ecological service as well as heritage protection.
The work of ijgd is funded by state and federal subsidies as well as from other public institutions.
Encouraging intercultural understanding has remained one of the main focuses. Ijgd enables people to actively create community life while giving them the opportunity to broaden their horizons.
Ijgd invites all interested people to join projects working for the communal good!
Self-Organization is spelt with a capital S at ijgd! It purposely foregoes a camp day that is organized by its participants in lieu of a completely pre-organized one. A readiness for active participation in the group is expected from all participants. The group organizes everything about the camp, this includes grocery shopping, cooking, deciding what to do with free time, as well as all other activities of the camp.
