CASTRO E ROMERIA DE SAN LOURENZO

  • The General Direction for Youth, Participation and Volunteering has among its powers to promote work camps in the region of Galicia. This general direction belongs to the Ministry of Social Policy of the regional government of Galicia (www.xunta.gal).
  • We will carry the work needed for the visitors to be able to easily walk around the site . Daily work will include cleaning up the archaeological area and the path, removing the dead brushwood and make all the area look clean and pretty. Also, part of the tasks will be helping to organise the San Lourenzo festival on the top of the hillfort. It is a traditional festival which had been lost and recovered a few years ago. All the community gets involved so you will be working hand in hand with locals and who knows, if you have any special skill you may perform something during the festival.
  • We want you to be confortable after work, so we have prepared a confie accommodation at the local sports center with bunk beds. To sleep bedding is provided (sleeping bag or sheets). We also need you strong so all the meals will take place at local restaurants. You will get to know Galician culinary, one of the things we are well-known.
  • Whileas your work is happening, archaeological dig may be taking place, so you will know first hand how archaeologists work. The team will be there to explain how they work, how they record data and so on. However they are digging or not while you are there, archaeological workshops will take place, so you will know all about the site and how archaeology works.Besides archeology, we have prepared loads of fun for you. You will get to know very closely the territory through the tours we have prepared. You will visit other sites, palaces, natural attractions, traditional wineries and you will even walk a small part of the famous Camino de Santiago.
  • The specific and compulsory tasks of the camp will be developed in the morning. The volunteers will be divided into groups and will work under the guidelines of the director of the camp who will coordinate the tasks. In the middle of the morning there will be a break for refreshment with a piece of fruit and water. As for the voluntary activities in the afternoon there will be many activities to choose from. The evening activities will offer several options (games, visits to near villages).Cooperation and teamwork will be encouraged in order to improve the development of the camp.

SVI is the Spanish association which represents the Spanish workcamps managed by the Autonomous Regions (except those in Catalonia). We are under the Institute of Youth (Injuve).

Injuve, an Autonomous Department of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality, has, for some years now, been promoting specific programmes which are aimed at increasing and favouring different travel possibilities for young people. This enables those under 30 years of age to become aware of other realities, visit other places and have access to other cultures.

Included among these programmes is one known as International Voluntary Service (SVI), which deals only with workcamps. These are aimed at youth between 18 and 26 years old and their main objectives are:

- To encourage conduct that will favour the exchange of ideas and young people’s global development. This is achieved by volunteering and from the contributions made by youth from their own experience. This strengthens intercultural learning processes, personal development and the reinforcement of democratic values.

- To integrate experiences, personal knowledge and the global development of youth in the carrying out of an activity, within the framework of voluntary service.
The Youth Institute co-ordinates the exchange of places for young Spaniards wanting to volunteer in foreign workcamps and foreigners wanting to volunteer in Spanish workcamps. The Spanish workcamps are managed by the Autonomous Regions.
