  • The General Direction for Youth, Participation and Volunteering has among its powers to promote work camps in the region of Galicia. This general direction belongs to the Ministry of Social Policy of the regional government of Galicia (
  • Participants will participate in a unique experience in the recovery of heritage, in addition to knowing the traditions of the neighbors who have been transmitting them orally for generations.The star element of Rios City Council is the chestnut tree, a forest use that has been the economic base of many families and that still today represents an important part of the family economy in the area. Chestnut trees constitute an economic, landscape and identity resource of Rios.In this work camp, we will focus on the recovery of chestnuts that are in a worse state of conservation; in the divulgation of the importance of the balance between the species and the maintenance of the foxo do lobo.Foxo do lobo is a traditional construction used in the rural area for hunting the wolf or any other animal considered harmful and/or dangerous.Activities:Conditioning and recovery of a chestnut tree.Conditioning of the foxo do lobo.Intervention on a burnt forest surface.Recovery of historical and ethnographic memory on a lunch day to gather information about the conditions of how the land was worked and working conditions.Other bio-construction activities, shelters for amphibians, birds, etc.
  • The participants will stay in the Centro de Interpretacion da Castanha, which has all the available services inside: 40 beds, bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, projection room, available room for cooking, workshops and so forth.The diet includes breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner.

SVI is the Spanish association which represents the Spanish workcamps managed by the Autonomous Regions (except those in Catalonia). We are under the Institute of Youth (Injuve).

Injuve, an Autonomous Department of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality, has, for some years now, been promoting specific programmes which are aimed at increasing and favouring different travel possibilities for young people. This enables those under 30 years of age to become aware of other realities, visit other places and have access to other cultures.

Included among these programmes is one known as International Voluntary Service (SVI), which deals only with workcamps. These are aimed at youth between 18 and 26 years old and their main objectives are:

- To encourage conduct that will favour the exchange of ideas and young people’s global development. This is achieved by volunteering and from the contributions made by youth from their own experience. This strengthens intercultural learning processes, personal development and the reinforcement of democratic values.

- To integrate experiences, personal knowledge and the global development of youth in the carrying out of an activity, within the framework of voluntary service.
The Youth Institute co-ordinates the exchange of places for young Spaniards wanting to volunteer in foreign workcamps and foreigners wanting to volunteer in Spanish workcamps. The Spanish workcamps are managed by the Autonomous Regions.
